Preventative

— Sealants:

Dental sealants act as a barrier, protecting the teeth against decay-causing bacteria. The sealants are usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars and molars) where decay occurs most often.

— Fluoride:

Fluoride is a chemical that will harden teeth making you more resistant to tooth decay. The drinking water in Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls, Hayden, and Rathdrum contains only trace amounts of Fluoride, so supplementation is often recommended. However, if you drink from well water, you may be getting the proper amount. Consuming too much fluoride can have ill effects, so talk to your Coeur d'Alene dentist to see if your children are candidates to take fluoride supplements. Fluoride may also be recommended to you in the topical variety. This doesn't help the teeth that are forming under the gums in children, but the teeth that are present in the mouth. Topical fluoride can repair teeth that are in the beginning stages of tooth decay and can also help with teeth that are sensitive to cold or sweets.

— Relaxation Dentistry:

Our aim at Element Dental is to make your visit as comfortable as possible. We provide high quality treatment in a compassionate environment. We take special interest in helping the fearful and sensitive patient that may be avoiding dental treatment because of previous experiences. In our Coeur d'Alene office we offer nitrous oxide and minimal sedation. You may also enjoy our noise canceling headphones or choose to watch a movie in the chair. Dr. Rachel Fehling has taken numerous hours of continuing education that enable her to treat the dental phobic patient.

— Digital X-rays:

One of the greatest advances in dentistry in the past decade has been digital X-Rays. At Element Dental Care in Coeur d'Alene, ID, we have replaced the old, stiff, pokey X-ray films that required a lot of radiation with smooth digital sensors that require significantly less radiation.

— Pregnancy Oral Health:

Pregnancy is a very special time. Your oral health is an important part of your overall health, and good oral health habits not only help prevent oral problems during pregnancy, but they also affect the health of your unborn child. As a female dentist who is also a mother, Dr. Rachel Fehling can tell you firsthand about her experience with pregnancy gingivitis. During pregnancy, hormone levels are high. This increased level of progesterone in your system may lead to increased sensitivity caused by puffy, tender, and easily bleeding gums.

Your Coeur d'Alene dentist will likely want to see you every 3-4 months while pregnant and breastfeeding to avoid any long-term damage due to these symptoms.

X-rays are only indicated for emergency treatment during pregnancy. If you must have work done, the second trimester is ideal, but since untreated dental infections can pose a risk to the fetus, they will be addressed at any point in the pregnancy.

— Laser Dentistry:

In our CDA dental office serving the Post Falls, Coeur d'Alene, and Hayden area, we use a soft-tissue laser for a variety of reasons. With a dental laser we can desensitize the root surface of sensitive teeth, we can treat canker sores and herpetic cold sores, perform laser bacterial reduction, and even perform laser assisted periodontal therapy described below. Ask your Coeur d'Alene dentist more about the advancements of lasers in dentistry today.

— Laser Periodontal Therapy:

Periodontal (gum) diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. The word periodontal literally means "around the tooth." Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. It begins when the bacteria in plaque (the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth) causes the gums to become inflamed. If you have been told you need scalpel and suture gum surgery, there's a laser alternative for you. If you want a solution to your gum disease that's comfortable, predictable and fits in your budget then Laser Periodontal Therapy is what you have been waiting for. If you have been putting off treating your gum disease due to fear of pain or cost, then ask Dr. Rachel Fehling, your dentist in Coeur d'Alene how she can help you.

Restorative

— Tooth Colored Fillings:

Composite fillings are a mixture of glass or quartz filler in a resin medium that produces a tooth-colored filling. They are sometimes referred to as composites or filled resins. Composite fillings provide good durability and resistance to fracture in small-to-mid size restorations that need to withstand moderate chewing pressure. At Element Dental in North Idaho, we like them so much because less tooth structure is removed when preparing the tooth, and this may result in a smaller filling than that of an amalgam or silver filling. Composites can also be "bonded" or adhesively held in a cavity, often allowing the dentist to make a more conservative repair to the tooth.

— Porcelain Veneers:

There's no reason to put up with gaps in your teeth or with teeth that are stained, badly shaped or crooked. With porcelain veneers placed on top of your teeth, we can correct misalignments or the results of an injury and help give you have a beautiful smile.

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front side of teeth. A dental technician makes in a dental lab, working from a model provided by your CDA dentist.

You should know that this is usually an irreversible process, because it's necessary to remove a small amount of enamel from your teeth to accommodate the shell.

This is a two-step process, where your cosmetic dentist will prepare the teeth, and you will leave with beautiful plastic temporaries. You will then return in two to three weeks to have your porcelain veneers bonded to your teeth.

— Professional Tooth Whitening:

At Element Dental, we offer Lumibrite at home whitening in a 32% solution. We will fabricate custom whitening trays that perfectly fit your mouth in our Coeur d'Alene office. With the 32% solution you only have to wear the trays for a mere 3 minutes a day for up to two weeks to get the beautiful smile you deserve.

— Bonding:

Dental bonding is the process of repairing teeth using a composite resin. Your Coeur d'Alene dentist may recommend this as a cosmetic procedure to fill in spaces, or to repair decay that makes front teeth look dark.

— Crowns:

Your dentist in Coeur d'Alene may be recommended a crown to you for a variety of reasons. Crowns are indicated in cases where you are having biting sensitivity due to a cracked tooth, to cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn't enough tooth left, to protect a weak tooth from breaking or restore one that's already broken. A crown can be made of gold, porcelain, or a combination of the two.

— Bridge:

Sometimes called a fixed partial denture, a bridge replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth, looks great, and literally bridges the gap where one or more teeth may have been. The restoration can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain or a combination of these materials and is bonded onto surrounding teeth for support.

Unlike a removable bridge, which you can take out and clean, a fixed bridge can only be removed by your Coeur d'Alene dentist.

— Root Canals:

Inside each tooth is the pulp, which provides blood supply and nerves to the tooth, it runs like a thread down through the root. When the pulp is diseased or injured, the pulp tissue dies. If you don't remove it, your tooth gets infected and you could lose it. After Dr. Rachel Fehling removes the pulp, the root canal is cleaned and sealed off to protect it. Then your dentist in Coeur d'Alene places a crown over the tooth to help make it stronger.

— Implants/Implant Restorations:

When you're missing teeth, bridges or dentures may not be your only options for replacement. In certain cases, dental implants offer a solution that looks and feels very natural. A dental implant is surgically placed below the gums over a series of appointments. The implant fuses to the jawbone and serves as a base for individual replacement teeth, bridges or a denture.

Implants offer stability because they fuse to your bone. Integration of the implants into your jaw also helps your replacement teeth feel more natural and some people also find the secure fit more comfortable than conventional substitutes.

Candidates for dental implants need to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant. A thorough evaluation by your Coeur d'Alene dentist will help determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants.

— Dentures:

If you've lost all of your natural teeth, whether from periodontal disease, tooth decay or injury, complete dentures can replace your missing teeth and your smile. Replacing missing teeth will benefit your appearance and your health. Without support from the denture, facial muscles sag, making a person look older. You'll be able to eat and speak things that people often take for granted until their natural teeth are lost.

There are various types of complete dentures. A conventional full denture is made and placed in the patient's mouth after the remaining teeth are removed and tissues have healed which may take several months. An immediate complete denture is inserted as soon as the remaining teeth are removed. The dentist in North Idaho takes measurements and makes models of the patient's jaws during a preliminary visit. With immediate dentures, the denture wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. Dr. Rachel Fehling likes to remind her patient that although the teeth will look beautiful, there will be an adjustment period. It could be likened to loosing an arm or leg, and adjusting to life with a prosthetic limb. A denture is a prosthesis for the mouth.

Even if you wear full dentures, you still must take good care of your mouth. Brush your gums, tongue and palate every morning with a soft-bristled brush before you insert your dentures to stimulate circulation in your tissues and help remove plaque. It is also important to continue seeing your Coeur d'Alene dentist for regular check-ups to ensure the gums underneath the denture remain healthy.

— Partial Dentures:

A very cost effective way to replace numerous missing teeth is a partial denture. Removable partial dentures usually consist of replacement teeth attached to pink or gum-colored plastic bases, which may be connected by metal framework. In areas where the metal may show in your smile, your dentist in Coeur d'Alene, ID may recommend tooth colored clasps.

Cosmetic Dentistry

— Gingivectomy:

A gingivectomy is a periodontal surgical procedure that includes the removal of gingival tissue in order to achieve a more aesthetic appearance and/or functional contour. Gingival tissue can become enlarged for a number of reasons such as medications you may be taking or while wearing braces. At Element Dental, we'll perform your gingivectomy with a dental laser while using minimal to no anesthetic.

"In the past I've only had dentists hurry through treatment and never speak to me. At this office I had the exact opposite experience. Everyone was calm and patient with me. They took time to get to know me. Dr. Fehling and the staff were so gentle with the numbing process and treatment. The next day they even called to check on me; I feel they really care! I know my family and I will be very happy there!!"
